Summertime champions an art world where artists with and without intellectual disabilities create and display work alongside one another. Founded in May of 2019, Summertime is a nonprofit 501c3 Art Studio and Gallery located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Summertime connects neurodiverse artists with the people and world around them, providing a platform to tell their stories, show their work and generate income.

The DA team worked closely with Summertime to imagine and co-create spatial solutions for their small space to transform from artist workspace to gallery with seamless efficiency.

To determine a design approach, the team engaged Summertime’s community of artists through a participatory pin-up to showcase and invite feedback on proposals for the future physical space, in order to understand what design ideas reasonated and what ideas could best serves their needs.

The final product was an interior renovation of the gallery and the creation of a modular table that could transition from a consolidated showcase table for gallery openings and group events to a collection of individual worktables for artists creating in the gallery.
